Cooling
My AC is blowing warm air
Call today if these checks don’t fix it.
Try this first
- The thermostat is set to Cool, and set lower than the room temperature.
- The air filter isn't clogged. If you can't see light through it, replace it.
- The breaker for the AC is on, and so is the shut-off box next to the outdoor unit.
- The outdoor unit is running and isn't packed with grass, leaves or cottonwood.
What it usually is: a failed capacitor, a dirty outdoor coil or low refrigerant. All common, all fixable.
There's ice on the AC lines or indoor unit
Call today if it ices up again after thawing.
Try this first
- Set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On. The ice can take a few hours to melt.
- Replace the air filter.
- Open any closed vents and move furniture off the return grilles.
- Leave the ice alone. Chipping it off damages the coil.
What it usually is: too little airflow, or low refrigerant from a leak.
The AC won't turn on at all
Call today if these checks don’t fix it.
Try this first
- Put fresh batteries in the thermostat, if it takes them.
- Check the breakers for both the indoor and the outdoor unit.
- Look for water in the pan under the indoor unit. A full pan trips a safety switch that shuts everything off.
What it usually is: a tripped safety switch, a bad capacitor or a thermostat wiring problem.
Water is leaking around the indoor unit
Call today to protect your floors and ceilings.
Try this first
- Turn the system off so it stops making water.
- Check the drain line where it leaves the house. If it's not dripping while the AC runs, it's probably clogged.
- Soak up standing water and move anything that can be ruined.
What it usually is: a clogged condensate line. A frozen coil melting can look the same.
Heating
The furnace won't start
Call now if it’s freezing outside. Pipes can freeze in an unheated house.
Try this first
- The thermostat is on Heat, set above the room temperature, with fresh batteries.
- The furnace power switch is on. It looks like a light switch on or near the furnace.
- The front panel is fully closed. Furnaces won't run with it loose.
- The air filter isn't clogged.
What it usually is: a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter or a tripped limit switch.
My heat pump runs nonstop in cold weather
Usually normal. Heat pumps run longer, not hotter, when it’s cold.
Check this
- The air filter is clean.
- Light frost on the outdoor unit that clears every so often is normal defrosting. A solid block of ice is not.
- The house is holding the temperature you set.
Call us if the house can’t stay warm or the outdoor unit stays iced over.
Some rooms are always too hot or too cold
Can wait. Book a visit when it suits you.
Try this first
- The vents in those rooms are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs.
- Return grilles aren't covered.
- The air filter is clean.
What it usually is: leaky or undersized ductwork. We measure the airflow and show you what’s wrong before suggesting anything.
Plumbing
There's no hot water
Call today if these checks don’t fix it.
Try this first
- Gas water heater: check whether the pilot or status light is on. Most have relighting steps printed on the side.
- Electric water heater: check the breaker.
- If some faucets run hot and one doesn't, the problem is that faucet, not the heater.
What it usually is: a failed thermocouple or igniter on gas units, or a burned-out element on electric ones.
The water heater is leaking
Call now. Leaks get worse, not better.
Do this now
- Close the cold water valve on the pipe above the heater.
- Turn off the breaker (electric) or set the gas control to Off.
- Keep kids and pets away. The water may be scalding.
Straight answer: a leak from the tank itself means it needs replacing. A leak from a valve or fitting can often be repaired. We’ll tell you which it is.
A pipe burst or water is pouring out
Call now. Shut off the water while you dial.
Do this now
- Close the main water shut-off. It's usually where the water line enters the house: a basement wall, crawlspace or utility closet.
- Turn off the water heater.
- If water is near outlets or wiring, stay out of that area.
A drain is slow or clogged
Can wait if it’s just one drain.
Try this first
- Use a plunger with a few inches of water in the sink or tub.
- Pull out and clean the stopper. Hair collects there.
- Skip chemical drain cleaners. They can damage pipes and rarely clear a real clog.
Call us if several drains are slow at once or toilets gurgle. That points to the main line.
Indoor air quality
The house gets dusty fast or feels stuffy
Can wait. Start with the filter.
Try this first
- Replace the air filter. Most need changing every 1 to 3 months, more often with pets.
- Make sure the filter fits its slot snugly, with no gaps around the edges.
If the dust keeps coming back, leaky return ducts may be pulling in attic or crawlspace air. We can test for that.
There's a musty smell from the vents
Call this week. Moisture problems spread.
Try this first
- Check the pan under the indoor unit for standing water.
- Replace the air filter.
What it usually is: moisture in the drain pan or ductwork, which can grow mold.
